About Chit

A chit, in plain English, is a short note recording money owed — the original, paper-and-pen version of an invoice. Chit is a free invoice generator built for freelancers, by a freelancer, that gets you from blank page to a clean PDF in under a minute.

I build mobile apps for clients — through freelance marketplaces, and directly — and for years my "invoicing system" was a Word template I kept editing in place, hoping I hadn't broken the formula in the totals row. It worked, barely, until a client asked for an invoice in a currency I hadn't set up a section for, and I spent twenty minutes rebuilding a document I should have been able to generate in twenty seconds.

Chit is the tool I wanted: open it, fill in the client and the line items, get a clean PDF, done. No account to create, no file to email me, nothing to remember a password for.

"Your business details and your clients' details never leave your browser. There's no server storing your invoices — that's not a privacy feature we bolted on, it's the entire architecture."

How it stays free

Chit doesn't charge for any feature and never will need to — there's no file storage, no email sending, and no database to pay for, so there's no usage cost to recover. The site carries a small amount of advertising (Google AdSense) to cover hosting and the time spent maintaining it. Ads never appear inside the invoice document itself, on the PDF you download, or anywhere a client might see them.

Who it's for

Freelancers and small service businesses anywhere — anyone who wants a professional-looking invoice out the door in a minute, without setting up an account to do it.
